| Future Fuels & Power Anyone following Truck and Bus Builder closely will have noticed the increase in the number of reports related to alternative fuels and propulsion. It is certainly the topic which has replaced size and horsepower in the truck and bus market. Such is the importance as a subject the publishers of Truck & Bus Builder decided it merited a regular supplement to chronicle developments in this area. Readers of Truck & Bus Builder may think that this is perhaps not a good time to start looking at new products and new technologies, with all manufacturers suffering under the current financial crisis. We think not. New technologies need to be embraced. There is however a great deal of confusion, as currently there are over 40 alternative fuels and power trains being investigated globally, some of them dead ends. The aim of this supplement is bring to the CV industry a supplement which not only reports global developments but one which explains what particular manufacturers are doing and probes into the technologies available to the industry. We don’t have to remind readers that fossil fuels are being used up at a rate 100,000 times faster than they can renew themselves, so it is clear that something must be done. Alternatives that are available range from natural gas to biodiesel and from electricity to hydrogen. Biodiesel and natural gas are the current quick fix solutions, though in the long run, electricity produced from a totally clean source, such as solar or wind power, may be the solution. In terms of vehicle technologies, hybrids are pushing their way to the forefront, as well as some electric vehicles. There are various types of hybrid set-ups, such as serial or parallel, for a range of applications, which we will cover in this supplement. This supplement to Truck & Bus Builder, which we plan to publish four times a year, will demonstrate just how many manufacturers from many countries are involved in the race to develop the green technology of the future.
